In this article, Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach shows that the preferential love for the poor is rooted in the text of the Spiritual Exercises. More explicitly, it is found in the “rules for the distribution of alms”. He traces its gradual development in the life of St. Ignatius and in the life of the early Society and then goes on to show that all Christians ought to have this affiliation with the poor.
